Laura Weightman is amongst the 75 names announced for Team England's athletics squad for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. The team, which consists of England's top athletes, already has 18 Commonwealth medals and 46 Commonwealth Games appearances between them, while a number of the chosen athletes will be competing at their very first multi-sport Games. Laura will be competing in the 5000mts, and Morpeth Harriers congratulate her selection and wish her well in next years competition. By posting an excellent seventh fastest time of 12m20s, Morpeth Harrier Senior Woman Emma Holt,
helped steer her club to a respectable top ten placing in their three-stage event at the Northern Athletics Cross Country Relays, held at a windswept Graves Park in Sheffield on Saturday 21st October 2017. Running on the first leg, she finished her 2mile effort in fifth place overall, behind Warrington AC International Harriet Knowles Jones, who clocked the fastest time of the day of 11m30s, but unfortunately had no one to hand over to, to finish as a complete team. Morpeth however did have Gemma Floyd (13m30s), and Josie Cram (13m33s) in support to Holt, to ensure a complete squad result, finishing exactly two minutes behind winners Lincoln Wellington, with their total time of 39m23s, who in turn denied victory to Morpeth’s North-East rivals Birtley AC by two seconds, who were boosted by the return to action by International Lydia Turner, who posted the day’s third fastest time of 12m05s. Sale Harriers of Manchester were third, and a further seventeen seconds adrift. The Senior Women, were the only squad from Morpeth taking part in the ten-event competition. It was certainly an excellent start to the Start Fitness North Eastern Harrier League season for Morpeth Harriers & AC, when they achieved no less than four team victories, one individual win, plus three fastest times of the day, at the first fixture, held at Wrekenton on Saturday 30th September 2017. An excellent individual victory by Emma Holt, paved the way for an
equally excellent Morpeth team victory in the Senior Women’s event. Running from the Fast Pack, she finished a mere four seconds ahead of club colleague Jane Hodgson. Further winning team support came courtesy of two superb runs by Alison Brown (4th) (Slow Pack), and Lorna MacDonald (9th) (Medium Pack). Other Morpeth performances in the Senior Women’s event, came from Gemma Floyd (21st) (Fast Pack), who was eighth fastest overall in a 462-strong field of finishers, Jane Briggs (38th) (Slow Pack), Lindsay Turnbull (52nd) (Slow Pack), Jane Kirby (110th) (Slow Pack), Sue Smith (223rd) (Slow Pack), Carol Parry (262nd) (Slow Pack), and Margaret MacDonald (340th) (Slow Pack). This was an excellent start to the season by the Senior Women, who are now competing in Division 1. |
