Morpeth Harrier Liam Marsh won the
Great South Junior Run in Portsmouth on Saturday 22nd October. The talented Under 17 athlete posted a time of 7m52s over a course of 2.5k, to win by six seconds over Josh Goldfinch of City of Portsmouth, who is one of Hampshire’s fast developing young prospects. Druridge Bay Park Run Almost two years to the date precisely, Morpeth Harrier Carl Avery broke his club colleague Ian Harding’s course record at the Druridge Bay Park Run on Saturday 22nd October. Avery clocked a very impressive 15m31s for the 5k circuit, taking nine seconds off the previous figures, and he was only a mere two seconds adrift of his very own Park Run best, which had been achieved in December 2014 on the Newcastle course. Finishing second to Avery on Saturday was his Morpeth Harriers club colleague, and Duathlon mate Steve Patterson, who equalled his best time of 17m54s. Other prominent Morpeth Harriers finishers were Colin Archer and Andrew Richardson, who were fourth and fifth across the finish line. Archer was agonisingly only a mere second adrift of his best on the course when clocking 18m47s, however Richardson was overjoyed to see his performance improve to 19m17s. Also, improving on her previous best was new Morpeth Harrier recruit Helen King, who finished 18th, clocking 21m52s, and was second in the Over 40 Veteran Women’s category. Two places behind Helen was club colleague Damian Foster, who posted a time of 22m35s on his 51st run on the course, making him officially a member of the Park Run 50 Club. One place and eight seconds adrift of Foster was fellow Morpeth Harrier Alex Zeller. Newcastle Park Run Another Morpeth Harriers winner on Saturday was Sam Hancox, who posted a new personal best of 15m44s on the Newcastle 5k circuit. Also, producing a new best at Newcastle was young Daniel Melling, who clocked 17m59s when finishing eleventh. One place and one second adrift of Daniel was Rob Hancox, father of Sam. Another prominent Morpeth finisher in Newcastle was young Dylan Davies, who at a very tender age finished 33rd. Bushy Park Run
Although he was second across the finish line at Bushy Park in Hertfordshire, results show that Morpeth’s Andrew Lawrence was recorded as the fastest, clocking 16m20s, which was a good thirty seconds adrift of his best on the course. The identity and the timing of the first athlete across the finish line remain a mystery. Posting identical finishing times of 17m26s, Morpeth Harriers Emma Holt
and Mark Snowball finished in 18th and 19th places in the Temple Park 5k Multi Terrain Race at South Shields on Saturday 22nd October . The event, which was won by Gateshead Harrier Chris Parr in 14m50s, had a total of 106 finishers, and Holt was the first Woman home, finishing twenty-seven seconds and eight places ahead of Middlesbrough Mandale’s Philippa Stone. The fourth and final events in the series of Linden Homes sponsored Morpeth Harriers
Young Athlete Road Championships were held on the 1.3mile circuit on Lancaster Park, on the evening of Monday 17th October 2016. Once again organisers and runners alike were blessed with relatively dry conditions, with very little wind as Kieran Hedley and Gracie Hufton became the respective winners of the Under 17 Men’s and Women’s titles for 2016. Posting a finishing time of 6m50s, the fastest time on the circuit this year, Hedley won with five seconds to spare over Rory Leonard, who has steadily built up his strength since having to terminate his 2015/16 winter campaign with a mystery upper body muscle injury, however is now back in excellent form, and certainly looks to have a good winter ahead of him, providing he stays clear of injury. For Hedley, he was adding another Gold Medal to his household, as younger sister Rhiannon is the Under 13 Girls Champion. Third place and Bronze medal in the Men’s event went to Taylor Glover, who equalled the previous best time on the circuit this year of 7m03s, run by Under 15 Boys Champion Daniel Dixon, two weeks previously. Hufton posted a time of 9m12s to win the Under 17 Women’s title, and Gold Medal by seven seconds from Kate Seymour, who won the Silver Medal. Bronze Medal went to Ailsa Jones, who clocked 9m52s. Only those three athletes contested the Women’s event, whilst another six in addition to the first three faced the starter in the Men’s event. Other Results were as follows Joe Ramshaw (4th) 7m18s, Liam Marsh (5th) 7m25s, Matthew Waterfield (6th) 7m26s, Connor Marshall (7th) 7m33s, Alex Cunningham (8th), and Joe Dowd (9th) 7m43s. All medallists will receive their awards at the annual Presentation Night, scheduled to be held at Bar Luga in Morpeth, on the evening of Sunday 20th November 2016. Morpeth Harriers wish to thank their sponsors Linden Homes for supporting the series of championships, and also Mick Groves (Timekeeping), Bob Appleby (Judge), Doug Cockburn (Lead Bike), Bill Tilley, Tony Ward, Mark Davies, Mark Hudspith, Vina Desai, Hemant Desai, Clair Cunningham, Tony Leonard, and others who carried out important marshalling duties throughout the four weeks of events, without your help the events would not have proved successful, and thankfully the weather played it’s part by being very settled during the course of events. Morpeth Harriers John Butters and Emma Holt, both retained their respective titles,
and improved on their finishing times at the annual Gibside Fruitbowl Multi Terrain event, held in the grounds of the historic National Trust property, close to Rowlands Gill, Gateshead, on Sunday 16th October 2016. Butters finished second to Blackhill Bounder Gary Wallace, only losing out for victory by thirty four seconds, when he posted a finishing time of 40m45s, improving on his finishing time over the approximately 6mile tough circuit of 2015, by sixty seven seconds, when he had finished fourth. He also retained the Over 40 Veteran Men’s title that he had won in 2015. It was also a welcome return to the tough course for Holt, as she finished 13th overall in 44m59s, improving her 2015 time by seventeen seconds, when she had placed 15th overall. She also retained her Women’s title, by a winning margin of five minutes over Heaton Harrier Hannah Shillitoe. Finishing just behind Holt in 14th place was fellow Morpeth Harrier Colin Archer, who produced an excellent performance, posting a time of 45m01s. Other Morpeth Harriers taking part in the event, which had a total of 436 finishers were Michael Winter (50th) (14th O/40 Man) 49m52s, Kevin Bray (76th) (15th O/50 Man) 52m47s, Sue Smith (303rd) (27th O/45 Woman) 68m18s, and Jacinta Wake (304th) (28th O/45 Woman) 68m19s. |
