The Annual England Athletics Regional Awards for Clubs and Volunteers from the North Eastern Counties, were held at the Riverside Cricket Ground in Chester Le Street, home of Durham Cricket Club on Wednesday 7th October 2015. Local Club and Support Officer John Stacey was MC for the night, where over 40 volunteers from the region attended, and the first cheer of the night came when it was announcedthat Morpeth Harriers & Athletic Club had been voted Club of the Year. On behalf of the club, President and former Commonwealth Games Marathon Champion Jim Alder accepted a framed Certificate and Glass Trophy depicting the achievement from England Athletics Board Member Neil Costello. The club had been nominated for the award in respect of their rise to prominence as a prolific performer in many areas and disciplines, and largely for their outstanding victory in the English National 12 Stage Men’s Road Relay in April after many years of trying. 194 finishing runners took part in the Run Northumberland Matfen 10k, on Sunday 11th October 2015, amongst them were six Morpeth Harriers. The event was won by Bellahouston’s Gregor Yates in a time of 35m21s. Second place went to Blyth Running Club’s Jake Jansen in a time of 35m53s. Morpeth Harrier Matthew Boyle finished third in 36m10s. Other Morpeth Harriers finishers were as follows Paul Banks (20th) (6th O/40 Man) 40m44s, Damian Foster (43rd) (10th O/40 Man) 45m06s, Carol Parry (77th) (3rd O/45 Woman) 49m55s, Susan Smith (89th) (4th O/45 Woman) 50m56s, and Jane Blackett (120th) (4th O/50 Woman) 55m07s. Chris Smith and Ady Whitwam of Morpeth Harriers & AC have both been selected to run for England at the British Masters Home International Cross Country meeting, scheduled to be held in Dublin on Saturday 14th November 2015. Both will compete in the Men’s Over 35 age group event. Many congratulations go to Chris and Ady on news of their selection, and we look forward to seeing them both perform well. Morpeth Harriers had five finishers in the Kielder Marathon,
on Sunday 4th October 2015. First home was Mark Snowball, who was 61st in a time of 3hrs31m42s over the very tough Multi Terrain course. He was followed home in 135th place by Kate Chapman, making a welcome return to action following an illness, she clocked 3hrs50m06s, and was ninth Lady home. Next home from the club was Gary Mason in 255th place. He clocked 4hrs12m28s, and was 89th Over 40 Veteran Man. Andrew Davison was fourth home from the club in 435th place, clocking 4hrs45m45s, and he was 42nd Over 50 Man. Closing the Morpeth Harriers tally was Claire Bruce, who was 516th in a time of 5hrs05m23s, and was 55th Over 40 Veteran Woman. |
