Morpeths Harrier Jonny Taylor finished in eighth place in the Men’s 3000m at the televised IAAF Diamond League Grand Prix meeting, held at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium, on Sunday 5th June. He posted a season’s best of 7m57.96s, behind Mo Farah of Newham and Essex Beagles, who won in a new lifetime best of 7m32.62s. However, Taylor may not race again this summer due to him being badly attacked by a dog whilst training near his Tees-side home, which has resulted in him sustaining serious injuries to his upper body and legs, enquiries are ongoing, and the club wish Jonny well, in what is hoped to be a full and speedy recovery. North Eastern Counties Under 17 Men’s Champion Ruaridh Lang of Morpeth Harriers, was certainly in fine form on Saturday 4th June 2016, when he finished a close second to City of Glasgow’s Andrew Peck, in the Discus, at the Scottish Athletics Throws Grand Prix, held in Livingston, Scotland. Lang produced a new lifetime best of 44.21m, which agonisingly was still a mere 23cm short of toppling the Scottish West District Champion, however this latest effort ranks him currently as eighth in the National rankings. Ruaridh also competed in the Shot Putt at Livingston, where he again finished second to Peck, with a best on the day effort of 11.97m, which is around 43cm adrift of his personal best. of the Linden Homes Athlete of the Month for April 2016, is Under 13 Girl Rhiannon Hedley. Hedley who was also a prominent force in the clubs Road & Cross Country squad, began her 2016 track campaign well by winning the 1500m at the opening meeting of the North Eastern Grand Prix series, in a time of 5m10.6s, which was agonisingly just four seconds adrift of her lifetime best, which nevertheless took her to the top of the regional rankings, and saw her in thirteenth place nationally. It also saw her achieve an award as Female Athlete of the Meeting for her efforts. Rhiannon’s award concludes the list of recipients of Linden Homes achievers for 2015-16, and she now joins Ruaridh Lang (May 2015), Bobbie Griffiths (June 2015), Scott Beattie (July 2015), David Thomas (August 2015), Kieran Hedley (September 2015), Holly Peck (October 2015), Taylor Glover (November 2015), Daniel Dixon (December 2015), Rory Leonard (January 2016), Amy Lott (February 2016), and Lily Heaton (March 2016) in the line-up for a more lucrative award as the Athlete of the Year, which will be decided very shortly. A total of 89 competitors completed one of the regions toughest multi terrain events on Wednesday 1st June,
with Sunderland Harriers hosting their annual Penshaw Hill Race for the 26th occasion. Morpeth Harrier Emma Holt in 12th place overall, was first Woman home for the second year running, posting a finishing time of 18m44s, which was two minutes and twenty seconds behind the host clubs Nathan Reed, who was also taking victory in the Men’s race for the second year running. Three places and twenty one seconds behind Emma, was her Morpeth Harriers club colleague Sarah Wilkinson, who was the second Woman home. Morpeth Harriers other finisher on the night, was Over 60 Veteran Man David Nicholson, who finished 37th overall in a time of 21m11s, and was second home in his age group. |
